Looking after you and our heritage

Boasting some of the world’s most spectacular and iconic buildings, the UK’s rich and historic treasure trove brings joy and upkeep challenges in equal measure.

The repair, restoration and renovation of our great castles, cathedrals, churches, listed buildings, stately homes, city gems, significant industrial sites and traditional structures need the highest levels of expert skill.

Led by James Woolgrove, Heritage Health and Safety’s mission is simple – to keep workforces and all site visitors safe while they preserve and appreciate the historic built environment.

James Woolgrove’s commitment and experience

I have been in the sector for over 25 years, helping to manage and plan complicated, challenging projects, ranging from co-ordinating successful Heritage Lottery funded schemes to helping volunteers construct a straw bale visitor centre safely.

I use a common sense, easy to access and implement approach. I believe in concise, uncomplicated reports and streamlined processes that enable works to be completed effectively while respecting the building and the skills of workers.

From castles to domestic homes, large visitor attractions to small business premises, I apply my experience solving health and safety issues, my appreciation of heritage skills and buildings, and my commitment to sustainability to help owners and trustees look to the future while respecting and celebrating traditional craftsmanship.

Case Studies

Heron Corn Mill

When James Woolgrove was brought in to work on historic Heron Corn Mill in Milnthorpe, Cumbria, his remit covered just a small element of health and safety. However, after trustees saw the range of benefits he could bring to the restoration, they asked him to get involved in managing the project, as well as further health and safety work on site.

Burnley Empire Theatre

One of the north’s most impressive theatres, attracting world renowned performers Charlie Chaplin, Harry Houdini and many more, 19th Century Burnley Empire is a class act in its own right. Built in 1894, it is of significant architectural interest, particularly for its auditorium, which was reconstructed in 1911 by Bertie Crewe to house 2,100 people. It is Burnley’s only Grade II listed purpose-built Victorian theatre.
